Compromises You’ll Make With Your First Home

Compromises You’ll Make With Your First Home

Many people have specific checklists of what they want in their first home. Not far into the house-hunting process, they realize they will make many more compromises than they initially thought.

However, making compromises doesn’t mean that everything is falling apart. Rather, things are just beginning. Read on to learn about the compromises you’ll make with your first home.

The Yard Size

One compromise you’ll likely need to make is on the size of your yard. Most people want a lot of space for activities and the privacy that yards provide, but not everyone can get this amenity, especially with their first home. The yard is a wonderful space for play and fun, but it will likely be one of the first items on your list that you compromise on, and you need to be okay with that.

By compromising on the yard, you can get more of what you want inside the home, which is where you and your family will likely be spending more of your time anyway. A large yard is a luxury, and it is okay if you don’t have one with your first home.

Single Story

Many families dream of an open-concept home with a big backyard and multiple stories. More and more houses have two stories than ever before, and this has become the ideal layout for many prospective homeowners. You may need to compromise by getting a single-story home. It may not be what you wanted, but that does not mean it doesn’t have value.

When you have a single-story home, everyone can easily get to other parts of the home and connect better. Additionally, you can make many great additions to your single-story home, such as a revamped garage, enclosed patio or sunroom, or even a renovated basement. Even without these additions, a single-story home can still be a great space for families of all sizes.

Your Ideal Location

Another factor that you are likely to compromise on is the location. You can have a great home, but if it’s in a less-than-desirable location, you’ll struggle to like it as much. Sadly, one of the first compromises you are likely to make is with the location. However, this compromise doesn’t mean you’ll end up in an unsafe area or multiple hours away from where you work.

Compromising means you must be willing to expand your search area by 20 or so miles. You’ll find many more houses that could be perfect for your starter home.

You’ll make some compromises with your first home, but that doesn’t mean you will end up in a home you don’t like. Your first house may not be what you initially envisioned, but you can turn it into a lovely home. You’ll make it a wonderful place to live.
