Leave and Come Back by Lavanya Lakshmi was an absolute delight to read. It combines romance, family drama, humor, and emotional depth in a way that feels both entertaining and meaningful.
The story follows Simran as she returns home for a family wedding after years away. What unfolds is a beautiful mix of wedding festivities, family tensions, old wounds, and unexpected opportunities for healing. Set against the backdrop of a lively Indian wedding, the story delivers plenty of humor while also exploring deeper themes of grief, belonging, and reconnecting with the people who matter most.
One of my favorite things about this book was the cast of characters. The family felt vibrant, realistic, and full of personality. Every interaction added something to the story, whether it was a funny moment, an emotional conversation, or a reminder of how complicated family relationships can be.
The romance was sweet and engaging, but for me, the heart of the book was the family dynamic. The story beautifully captures how love can exist alongside misunderstandings, hurt feelings, and difficult memories. Watching Simran navigate those relationships made the emotional moments feel genuine and rewarding.
I also loved the cultural elements woven throughout the story. The wedding celebrations, family traditions, and Bollywood references added warmth and authenticity without ever feeling overwhelming. They helped create a rich setting that brought the entire story to life.
Lavanya Lakshmi’s debut strikes a wonderful balance between humor and heart. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, but there is also a thoughtful exploration of healing and forgiveness that gives the story lasting emotional impact.
If you enjoy contemporary romance with strong family themes, memorable characters, and plenty of wedding chaos, Leave and Come Back is definitely worth picking up. It is warm, funny, heartfelt, and one of my favorite reads of the year.
