D23 2026: Disney Unveils Major New Attractions, Lands and Cruise Ships

Disney has used D23 2026 to reveal one of its most substantial line-ups of future theme park and cruise developments in years, with new attractions and entertainment announced for Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris, alongside the next chapter of Disney Cruise Line.

The announcements were made during Horizons: A Carousel of Progress, the headline Disney Experiences showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim from August 14 to 16. While some of the projects had already been announced in outline, this year’s event provided important new details about what guests can actually expect, including new rides, themed lands, entertainment, and technology.

Villains Land is Finally Taking Shape at Magic Kingdom

One of the biggest reveals was the long-awaited Villains Land at Magic Kingdom. Disney has now confirmed two major attractions for the land: a high-speed Maleficent-themed roller coaster and a dark ride featuring the Magic Mirror and a collection of Disney villains.

The land will be built around a dark fantasy story involving a corrupted wishing well whose magic has spread through the surrounding forest. Guests will encounter characters including Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Ursula, Scar and Jafar, while the wider environment will feature themed dining and shopping. Disney has described the project as one of its most ambitious new lands, although an opening date has not yet been announced.

Magic Kingdom is also getting Piston Peak, a new Cars-themed area in Frontierland. The headline attraction, Cars: Ridge Run Rally, will take guests through mountain terrain, snowy peaks, and geysers, while a second attraction, Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along, adds a more family-friendly experience.

These announcements are significant because they show that the expansion of Magic Kingdom is not centred on a single new ride. Disney is effectively reshaping substantial areas of the park around new stories and attractions.

Walt Disney World is Expanding Far Beyond Magic Kingdom

The changes announced at D23 extend across Walt Disney World. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Monstropolis is moving closer to reality, bringing the world of Monsters, Inc. to the park with a new suspended coaster and additional themed experiences.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom will also gain two major attractions as part of the Tropical Americas development. Indiana Jones and the Myth of the Jade Serpent will bring Indiana Jones into a new archaeological adventure, with Harrison Ford serving as the model for an Audio-Animatronics figure. A separate Encanto attraction will take guests into the world of the Madrigal family. Disney has also confirmed that the Yeti Audio-Animatronic inside Expedition Everest is being brought back to full movement.

EPCOT is receiving an equally interesting dose of nostalgia. Spaceship Earth is being reimagined with a new storyline focused on humanity’s connection in the modern world, while Journey Into Imagination will bring back two of the park’s most recognisable characters, Dreamfinder and Figment.

For visitors planning future Walt Disney World holidays, the practical takeaway is that many of these projects are arriving on different timelines. Some have specific opening windows, while others remain under development without a confirmed date. Disney’s official D23 2026 Disney Experiences roundup is therefore the best place to monitor individual projects as construction progresses.

Disneyland Paris Gets One of the Most Exciting New Attractions

Disneyland Paris was another major focus at D23, particularly the developing Lion King-themed area at Disney Adventure World.

Construction is already underway on the first immersive world dedicated to The Lion King at a Disney park. The headline attraction will bring scenes and songs from the 1994 animated film to life with Audio-Animatronics, special effects and three major drops, including a 52-foot plunge from Pride Rock.

One detail revealed after the initial announcement makes the attraction particularly noteworthy: it will feature the first-ever Audio-Animatronics figure of Scar. Disney says the figure will appear during a confrontation between Scar and Simba inspired by the film’s climax.

Disneyland Paris is also preparing to restore its original Jules Verne-inspired concept for Space Mountain. The current Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain experience is scheduled to close at the end of 2027 for a refurbishment that will return the attraction to its De la Terre à la Lune roots. The updated version is expected to incorporate the original story and musical identity while retaining modern technical enhancements.

Another significant addition will arrive in 2028, when Disneyland Park introduces a brand-new daytime parade featuring characters from films including Aladdin, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled and Coco. The parade will become a new anchor for daytime entertainment at the resort.

Disney Cruise Line Prepares For Another Major Expansion

D23 also provided the first substantial look at the next stage of Disney Cruise Line’s expansion.

The Disney Believe will enter service in late 2027 as the fourth ship in the Wish class. Its Grand Hall will be inspired by Moana, while the exterior will feature Tinker Bell on the bow and Woody and Buzz Lightyear on the stern. Disney has also confirmed that the ship will incorporate experiences inspired by stories such as Encanto, Frozen, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Moana, and The Little Mermaid.

Perhaps more significant for the longer term is Disney’s confirmation of three completely new ships launching from 2029. The vessels will form a new class positioned between Disney’s classic ships and its newer, larger vessels. Disney says they will be bigger than the Disney Wonder but smaller than the Disney Wish, potentially allowing the cruise line to serve new destinations that are less suitable for its largest ships.

A New Phase For Disney Travel

The most interesting aspect of D23 2026 is not any single attraction. Taken together, the announcements show Disney continuing to expand its strategy across theme parks, entertainment, and cruising rather than relying solely on traditional new rides.

For travellers, that means the Disney holiday of the future could look quite different depending on when they visit. Walt Disney World is gaining new lands and attractions across several parks, Disneyland Paris is undergoing a major transformation with The Lion King and a refreshed Space Mountain, and Disney Cruise Line is preparing for a much larger fleet.

Many opening dates remain to be confirmed, so these announcements are best viewed as a roadmap rather than a completed list of attractions.
