Small business owners are often locked out of the top talent market. It feels like you can’t find the right person for the job, no matter what it is you do! You’ve put out a million ads, and you’ve done many interview rounds with perfectly friendly people.
But at the end of the day, you just can’t imagine yourself working without the exact right person for the role! And if that’s the kind of position you’ve found yourself in, we’ve got a few words for you.
After all, when it comes to attracting top talent and letting your business benefit from it, you’ve got to be careful about your hiring process.
Understand What You’re Asking for
We do need to be straightforward with you here. All those job ads you’ve put out and never caught anything with – are they written in a way that instantly tells anyone with the right skills that you don’t know what you’re asking for?
That’ll be the case if you’re accidentally asking someone to do the work of a full team of people. You want just the one person to take on various responsibilities, whether this be within marketing, sales, or customer service.
But they’ve only got 8 hours to their shift, and they’ve only got a certain pay per hour on top of that. Always consider this before you put a job ad out. Are you actually asking someone to do their fair share of work? And if you’re not, does it highlight a misunderstanding that could make working for you harder than you mean it to be?
Be as Transparent Over Pay as Possible
No one wants to work for a business where the wage on offer isn’t offered up front. It’s just not the kind of thing that attracts any kind of talent, let alone the top talent! You need to have a viable and transparent reward strategy set up before you hire someone.
So, what kind of wage could you provide? Does it match at least the minimum level in your region? If it doesn’t, once again, you’re not going to see many takers.
And even if it does, you are still unlikely to see any well-skilled and ready-to-work candidates sending their resumes in. Think about a genuinely fair wage for the work you’re asking for and go from there.
Meet Candidates Face to Face
This is the best way to end hiring journeys, whether or not you end up hiring the candidate. You want to see them face-to-face to get an impression of them, but that’s not the only benefit available here.
You’re also giving the candidate a chance to see and get an impression of you. And if you’re after top talent, they’re definitely going to want to know who they’ll be rubbing shoulders with day after day.
If you’re a small business owner in need of talent, take the advice above. Tips like these can do wonders for your hiring process!
