Psychological thrillers are always at their best when they’re built around complicated relationships, hidden secrets, and characters you can’t quite figure out. The Games We Play by Claire Quinn delivers all of that, making it a gripping read that was difficult to put down.

The story follows three lifelong friends whose shared past continues to cast a shadow over their present. As long-buried secrets begin to surface, the tension steadily builds, creating an atmosphere where trust becomes increasingly fragile. Rather than relying on constant action, the novel focuses on the emotional weight of friendship, guilt, and the consequences of decisions made years earlier.

One of my favourite aspects of the book was how the suspense unfolded. Every chapter added another layer to the mystery, and I found myself questioning each character’s motives as the story progressed. The pacing felt well-balanced, with enough twists to keep me engaged without feeling overwhelming.

Claire Quinn also does a wonderful job of exploring the complexities of female friendships. The relationships feel believable, with plenty of emotional depth alongside the suspense. That balance made the story feel more than just a thriller. It became a thoughtful look at loyalty, trust, and the lasting impact of the past.

Overall, The Games We Play was a thoroughly enjoyable read and an excellent debut. If you enjoy psychological suspense with strong character dynamics, unexpected twists, and a story that keeps you guessing until the end, this is one I would definitely recommend.
