4 Overlooked Ways To Look After Your Health and Fitness

You’ll have heard of the common ways that you should look after your health: keep the fast-food meals to a minimum, don’t leave those running shoes in the cupboard for too long, and don’t spend too many evenings out on the town with friends.

But if you’re going to remain as fit and healthy as you could, then you shouldn’t limit yourself to just the obvious methods for staying in shape and good health.

Indeed, there are some often overlooked ways to look after yourself, too. We take a look at four such ways below.

Focus on your Mind

We’re beginning to understand a lot more that, our physical and mental health are not divided; they are one. If you’re going through a period of depression or anxiety, then you’ll be less likely to look after yourself physically. These types of conditions can have a direct impact — for instance, when you’re mentally unsound, you’ll be less inclined to prepare fresh, healthy meals, or to exercise.

The stress that mental health conditions can invoke can also result in long-term health issues too. So rather than just focusing on your physical state, take steps to ensure you’re looking after your mind.

Meditation, yoga, and time spent in the outdoors can all push it in the right direction.

False Friend Foods

One of the problems with food is that while we think we can intuitively sense which items will be good for our health and which will be bad, this isn’t always the case.

There are some “false friends” that people tend to think are healthy, but which, in fact, are not. Frozen yogurts are not good for you, and neither are granola bars. You may also think that sushi is a healthy option for lunch, but you need to make sure it’s the right kind of sushi.

If yours is filled with cream cheese and all the sauces under the sun, then it’s going to contain a lot of calories.

Check Your Pill

The pill is a wonderful invention, but it’s far from perfect. Though it works just fine for some women, for others, complications arise. This can take the form of things like mood swings and weight gain, though in some cases, more serious medical conditions can occur, such as an increase in blood pressure and blood clots.

If you’re taking the pill and experiencing unwanted side effects, then consider stopping. There are plenty of safe alternatives out there, such as Durex condoms.

You can also consult with your doctor to see if there are more appropriate contraception methods available to you.

Shifting Baselines

One reason why people fall into ill health and fitness is that they lower their standards of what’s acceptable.

A person might have partaken in exercise four times a week, then three, then two, then one. If you follow that path, then it’s normal that you won’t be as healthy as before.

So set your standards, and vow to stick to it — you’ll be thankful in the long run.
